Homestay operators advised to tap into Singapore market

SERIAN: It would be a good idea if homestay operators in Sarawak tap into the Singapore market to increase revenue and tourist arrivals. Tebedu assemblyman Dato Sri Michael Manyin, who said this, explained that Singapore schools for instance organise trips overseas as part of education for their students.

“Singapore is a target because over there, the students are encouraged to leave (and explore other countries for certain periods), and they are given (certain amount of money) for this purpose. This is an area which we can look into,” he said.

Manyin, who is also Infrastructure Development and Communication Minister and former minister in charge of tourism, made these remarks at a press conference when officiating a Hari Raya Aidilfitri gathering organised by the federal Tourism and Culture Ministry’s state office at Homestay Kampung Tebakang Melayu on Sunday night.

Permanent Secretary to the state’s Tourism Ministry Datu Ik Pahon, who also spoke, said there are currently 33 homestays in Sarawak and the main guests are students, domestic tourists from Peninsular Malaysia and backpackers from Europe. “Last year’s revenue from homestays were RM1.2 million, up from RM900,000 the previous year. So overall, there is an improvement (in terms of homestay revenue) in Sarawak.

“We also notice the growing interest among rural villages wanting to participate in homestay business. Though Ketua Kampung of Tebakang Melayu mentioned (earlier in the function) the number of tourist arrivals reduced this year, I believe this is temporary. The numbers might be reduced here, but in other homestays the situation could be otherwise,” he said.

He also explained that normally homestay tourists are not repeat visitors, as they would venture some more elsewhere, to experience the Dayak longhouse at one time, Malay kampungs the next time and sometimes they move up to Bario. “They are tourists who want to enjoy the lifestyle in the kampung and nature,” he said. “Some rooms in the homestays may cost RM120 one night. But what they want is the experience of staying in the Malay, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu and Iban villages. This is an experience they do not get when staying in hotels.”

Assistant Minister of Tourism Datuk Talib Zulpilip, Tourism and Culture Ministry’s Sarawak director Suriya Charles Buas and the village chief Hanapi Bani were among those present.

AirAsia Advises Customers To Check Status Online To Avoid Inconveniences

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 (Bernama) -- Low-cost carrier AirAsia advises its customers to check their flight statuses online before departing for the airport to avoid inconveniences because of flight delays due to bay closures at klia2. AirAsia in a statement Monday said a number of AirAsia and AirAsia X flights are facing slight delays ranging from 10 minutes to 45 minutes daily due to the nine bay closures at klia2.

"Guests are strongly encouraged to check their flight statuses online at the website, www.airasia.com before departing for the airport. Guests can also receive real-time updates on AirAsia by following the airline's Twitter (twitter.com/AirAsia) and Facebook (facebook.com/AirAsia) accounts," it said.

AirAsia said according to Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, the bays from K2 to K18 at klia2 were closed since July 31 as a safety precaution to allow Kuala Lumpur Aviation Fuelling System to perform a thorough check. It said both AirAsia and AirAsia X are working closely with the airport authority to minimise any inconvenience to its guests, who make up at least 92 per cent of total traffic at klia2.

Homestays getting popular with foreign tourists

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — Homestays are steadily gaining popularity among international tourists, with more opting for such accommodation during their stay in the country. Tourism and Culture Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Ong Hong Peng said the number had increased by 13 per cent for the first four months of this year to 23,159 people from 20,571 during the same period last year.

“The trend among foreign tourists to stay in homestays registered with the ministry is positive, and more choose to do so as it gives them a chance to experience the lifestyle, culture and food of locals in the rural community,” he said recently. He added that the number of domestic tourists who chose to stay in homestays had also increased by 2.7 per cent for the same period.

“In the four-month period, almost 92,000 domestic tourists chose homestays for their holiday compared with 88,835 last year,” he said. Ong said revenue from homestays for the first four months this year was RM7.3 million compared with RM6.3 million last year, a 15.4 per cent increase.

He said among the homestays, which recorded the highest revenue from January to May this year, were Taman Sedia Homestay, Cameron Highlands with a total income of RM2 million, Ba'kelalan Homestay, Sarawak (RM655,988) and Air Manis Homestay in Sabak Bernam (RM393,207). According to performance records, Taman Sedia Homestay received almost 32,000 international and domestic tourists followed by Ba'kelalan Homestay (2,962) and Air Manis Homestay (1,524), he said.

He said the homestay programme was one of those identified by the ministry to develop rural tourism and the economy of locals. “So far we have 3,486 homestay operators registered with the ministry and 4,834 rooms available,” he added.

Meanwhile, Paya Guring Homestay operator Romlee Hassan said the village concept in an orchard and friendliness of residents in the area of his homestay were among the main attractions for visitors and tourists. “Most of our guests are parents who visit their children in nearby learning institutions and they are excited by the chalet concept we offer, as well as our good services,” he said.

Paya Guring Homestay, which began operations in 2001 and situated four kilometres from Arau, Perlis, uses the social media such as Facebook and blog to promote its services, to tourists, he added. Romlee also admitted that the homestay programme not only increased the income of rural folks, it also provided jobs to youths with skills such as crafts and spa massage. — Bernama
